About this role
AFRY is one of the largest international power sector consulting and engineering companies with 19,000 experts worldwide creating sustainable solutions. In South East Asia, it leads with offices in Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and more, employing over 500 in power generation. The role supports dam and hydropower projects amid increasing business.
The Senior Site/Field Geologist delivers advanced geological and geotechnical expertise for dam foundations and underground works from pre-feasibility to construction. Responsibilities include designing site investigations like geological mapping to build ground models evaluating rock parameters and hydrogeology. Also sources construction materials and provides construction-stage support for stability and constructability.
Daily work involves planning and supervising investigations such as borehole logging, rock mass classification, and hazard identification. On-site, verifies ground conditions during excavation and tunnelling, recommending adaptations. Office time assists in preparing design reports with detailed geological input.
Collaborates closely with design engineers, geotechnical specialists, and construction teams to assess hazards across the project lifecycle. Coordinates with contractors and consultants for integrated inputs. Ensures compliance with HSE requirements, site safety, and international standards while communicating risks effectively.
Requirements
- Advanced expertise in geological and geotechnical investigations for dam foundations and underground works
- Proficiency in rock mass classification, fault and discontinuity analysis, and hydrogeological modeling
- Experience with surface geological mapping, borehole logging, and core assessment
- Knowledge of groundwater evaluation and seepage conditions in hydropower projects
- Familiarity with foundation treatment methods including grouting and curtain grouting
- Ability to develop geological ground models and geotechnical baseline reports
- Understanding of rock material and rock mass parameters for design and constructability
Responsibilities
- Plan, supervise, and interpret geological and geotechnical investigations including surface mapping, borehole logging, core assessment, rock mass classification, groundwater evaluation, and identification of geological hazards relevant to dam foundations and underground works.
- Provide geological input to the design of dams, tunnels, underground caverns, and powerhouses, including foundation assessment, rock mass characterization, fault and discontinuity analysis, seepage conditions, and ground behavior.
- Deliver on-site geological support during excavation, tunnelling, and foundation preparation, verifying actual ground conditions against design expectations and recommending design adaptations or construction measures.
- Support and supervise foundation treatment and ground improvement works, including grouting, consolidation, curtain grouting, and seepage control measures for dam foundations and underground structures.
- Prepare and review geological and geotechnical sections of feasibility studies, Geological Data Reports (GDR), Geological Interpretative Reports (GIR), Geotechnical Baseline Reports (GBR), and construction-stage reports.
- Coordinate closely with civil, geotechnical, and structural engineers, and liaise with contractors, drilling teams, and investigation consultants.
- Communicate geological findings, risks, and recommendations clearly and effectively to project stakeholders.
- Ensure all geological activities comply with HSE requirements, site safety regulations, local legislation, and applicable international standards.
Benefits
- Contribute to sustainable solutions for future generations
- Work with multinational team of more than 500 in power generation across Asia
- Regional leadership in power sector consulting from South East Asia offices
